A common reason why a dog jumps on people is because it was simply never taught in the first place that this behavior was unacceptable. A common greeting among the owners of puppies is bending down and picking the little dog up – not good! This will encourage the dog from an early age to jump up on a person, and can condition the dog to become excited and jump on you when they receive even the slightest little bit of affection or attention.
Aggression and dominance is another cause for dogs jumping continually. Aggressive dogs can be a threat towards both their owners and family members. This is a serious and potentially dangerous problem, and if you are not experienced in dealing with aggressive dogs, it’s suggested you hire a professional dog trainer to help.
But for the dog who just jumps out of a need for attention or friendliness, you can learn some simple dog training techniques that discourage your dog from jumping:
Avoid greeting your dog with too much enthusiasm. Enthusiastic behavior will get your dog all excited and hyped up even more, which is what’s causing the jumping in the first place. Making a big fuss also teaches the dog to get excited when you come home, which almost forces them into “jump mode,” the last thing you want.
Do not yell at your dog if it jumps. It does not know that it’s unacceptable to jump on people, and the yelling might be interpreted as a threat, which in turn can make your dog aggressive.
Try avoiding pushing the dog away if it leaps up at you, because some dogs will think it’s a game and will repeat the jumping, thinking you’re being playful. Try keeping your voice low and steady, tell your dog to sit in a nice tone, and ignore your dog or leave the room if it tries to jump on you again. These are just a few examples of dog training techniques.
